is Zoological Medicine?
Veterinary medicine applying to both zoo and wildlife species; including
fish, birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. Zoological veterinarians
work to improve health care of the animals in captivity, as well
as in the wild, look to decrease suffering and conserve their natural
habitats.
Where
do zoological veterinarians find jobs?
Zoos, wild animal parks, aquariums, federal government (management
and conservation of free ranging wildlife), research positions,
and teaching institutions.
What
responsibilities do zoological veterinarians have?
Knowledge of husbandry, nutrition, and disease of wildlife species,
preventative medicine, estraint and anesthetic technique, examination,
diagnosis, and treatment of illness, surgery, promotion and protection
of public health, and research among other things.
The
objectives of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians are:

advance programs for preventive medicine, husbandry, and scientific
research in the field of veterinary medicine dealing with captive
and free-ranging wild animals.

provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of problems
related to the field of captive and free-ranging wild animals.

publish and distribute scientific information pertinent to the
field of veterinary medicine dealing with captive and free-ranging
wild animals.

enhance and uphold the professional ethics of veterinary medicine.
