UAB Obesity Expert to Give Goodwin Lecture

Dr. David B. Allison, Distinguished Professor and Associate Dean for Science at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, will present the 2013 Joy Goodwin Distinguished Lecture on Thursday, Oct. 10 at the CVM. Pathobiologists Receive Research Funding

CVM pathobiologists received a two-year $470,000 grant to conduct research to study neuropathology associated with mitochondrial disease. Dr. Carl A. Pinkert, now on contract with the CVM, and Dr. Michael H. Irwin and their team received the first year of funding for a two-year $470,000 grant from the Foundation for a Cure for Mitochondrial Disease. [read more]

High-Tech Protection for Eagles

The next time you see Nova or Spirit soaring at Jordan-Hare Stadium or at Football, Fans and Feathers, check out the small GPS on their tail feathers. The Southeastern Raptor Center is using Tagg pet trackers on the free-flighted eagles to monitor their activity and location, thanks to the generosity of Tagg. [read more]

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and there are many activities CVM students, faculty and staff can be involved in: awareness kicks off Oct. 3 when Cater Hall on main campus will be illuminated pink (as well as Samford Hall and Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art) at 7:30 p.m.; collect Pink Yoplait® yogurt lids and put them in Jessica Allen’s (class of 2016) mailbox; Paint it Pink 5K on Oct. 19 in Auburn; and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Oct. 12 in Birmingham. Celebrate your Auburn Spirit with the CVM

Join your CVM family for two fun events each home football game weekend. Football, Fans and Feathers educational program is held at 4 p.m. each Friday before a home game and features a variety of birds of prey. Tickets are $5 for the 4 p.m. program, held at the Southeastern Raptor Center Amphitheatre.

The CVM Development office hosts a tailgate beginning three hours before each kickoff on the Campus Green (near Parker Hall). Stop by and greet alumni, talk to prospective students and hang out with fellow faculty, staff and students. Refreshments are provided while they last.

Alumni Advisory Council Meets Oct. 4

Some of the CVM’s most important alumni and friends will be on campus Friday, Oct. 4 when the Alumni Advisory Council meets in Overton Education Wing. The 12-member council plays an integral role in providing guidance and counsel to administration of the CVM and has provided support for various college functions.

AVMA’s Oath in Action @ Ag Roundup Oct. 12

CVM students and faculty will be putting their “Oath in Action” using the American Veterinary Medical Foundation’s trailer at Ag Roundup on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Ag Heritage Park. CVM students and faculty will be educating the public on how to take care of their animals during natural disasters, handing out literature and promoting the profession. Ag Roundup is from 9 a.m. until noon. Admission is $5, children under 6 are free.

SCAVMA Fleece Sale

Fall temperatures will hopefully be soon, and SCAVMA is planning its annual fleece sale Oct. 14-19 in Overton. Support a great organization, stay warm and promote the CVM.  

CVM Blood Drive Oct. 15

The CVM’s annual Blood Drive with the American Red Cross will Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the Greene Hall lobby. Be sure to bring a photo ID or your Red Cross donor card.

Dean’s Tailgate Oct. 25

The CVM Staff Advisory Committee is finalizing plans for the annual CVM Dean’s Tailgate on Friday, Oct. 25 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Aubie, Emma the Donkey and Southeastern Raptor Center birds of prey are scheduled to make appearances; the ever-favorite dunking booth to support the Beat Bama Food Drive will allow those who want to donate food an opportunity to dunk a faculty member; and door prizes and music and fun are planned. Price’s BBQ is catering the event.
