The American College of Theriogenologists has honored Dr. Dwight Wolfe with the David E. Bartlett Award for his important contributions to the field of theriogenology. Dr. Wolfe accepted the award August 11 during the 2011 Society for Theriogenology Annual Convention held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

A food animal professor, Dr. Wolfe obtained his D.V.M. degree from Auburn in 1977 and his M.S. in large animal surgery and medicine in 1982.  He became a diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists in 1983. Named Alabama Veterinarian of the Year in 2004, he was inducted into the Alabama Livestock Hall of Fame in 2006.  In 2009 the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association presented Dr. Wolfe the Distinguished Service Award, the association’s highest honor.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano visited the Auburn University Canine Detection Training Center on Monday, Aug. 22, for a first-hand look at bomb-sniffing dogs and the technology behind them. After seeing a demonstration of the canines in action, Secretary Napolitano toured the center with Auburn University President Jay Gogue and Alabama Cong. Mike Rogers, who chairs a key homeland security subcommittee in Congress.

Auburn-trained canines are in service with various local, state, and federal agencies. Secretary Napolitano was interested in learning more about Auburn's patented Vapor Wake Detection technology that equips canines to identify explosive materials at airport security checkpoints or other transportation hubs.

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) has updated the protocol submission forms used by investigators to submit projects involving the use of live vertebrate animals to the committee for review.  The new forms include questions/information requests/addenda that reflect numerous changes found in the revised AAALAC Program Description template (2011), the Guide (2011), and the Ag Guide (2010).   All submissions (Protocols, SOPs, or Modifications) to the IACUC on or after September 1, 2011 must be on the revised forms.  The forms may be found on the new Office of Research Compliance (ORC) -  IACUC Administration website. Auburn University's Southeastern Raptor Center hosts educational, birds-in-flight raptor programs this fall on Fridays before home football games. "Football, Fans, and Feathers" kicks off Sept. 2 at 4 p.m.  Programs take place in the 350-seat Edgar B. Carter Educational Amphitheater at 1350 Raptor Road off Shug Jordan Parkway. Visitors learn about the residents of the Raptor Center during these entertaining programs, which are open to the public. Programs will also be held Sept. 9, 23; Oct. 14, 28; and Nov. 18 and 25, each beginning at 4 p.m. Admission is $5, and children under age 3 are admitted free. Admission is $3 a person for school groups of 25 or more, and those groups should call 844-6943. Read the news release for more information.
