From the early work of Dr. Charles Allen Cary more than a century ago, to the development of some of the world's most advanced veterinary programs, Auburn has influenced the character and scope of veterinary medicine.

Due to the generosity of donors and sponsors, the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine presented $350,000 in scholarships and awards to over 125 veterinary students on Honors Night on Feb. 17. Honors Night also recognized the outstanding teaching ability and research achievements of six faculty members. We congratulate all!

The Faculty of 1000 (F1000) has cited a paper published by a research team led by Dr. Benson Akingbemi as one of the best research articles available. The study, “Developmental exposures of male rats to soy isoflavones impact Leydig cell differentiation,” appeared in the journal Biology of Reproduction. Faculty of 1000 numbers more than 10,000 experts worldwide who identify and evaluate the most important articles in biology and medical research publications. On average, 1500 new evaluations are published each month. The selection of Dr. Akingbemi’s work places it at the top 2% of all published articles in the biological and medical sciences. Dr. Akingbemi, an associate professor in the Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology, studies the effects of environmental toxicants on male reproductive tract development and function. His study of the toxicity of soy-based diets is funded by the National Institutes of Health.
Head Coach Gene Chizik was the special guest at the Feb. 25 CPC presentation. Angelica Reyes, Class of 2011, prepared a special PowerPoint highlighting CVM’s learning opportunities and introducing the latest female additions to Auburn’s dairy herd. “It is an honor to have a cow named after you,” said Reyes. Based on Auburn’s championship football team, the CVM now has a new roster of names, including “Miss Gena” for cow #106 named in the coach’s honor. “There is no place like Auburn,” said Coach Chizik. “The passion, the tradition, and the pride. And the reason is because of you – the students, the fans, the family. And,” he added,” that’s without you naming a cow after me!”
The CVM Graduate Student Association has created an ab initio lecture series. For the event, CVM faculty members are asked to talk about their journey ab initio, or from the beginning, through academia, including undergraduate/graduate studies, post-doc training, and other experiences that contributed to their current career in science as a researcher/professor/veterinarian. They are also asked to share their opinion on additional careers for graduate students who possibly plan to follow in the speaker's academic footsteps.

Veterinary Camp 2011, conducted by CVM faculty, staff, and students, is offered to 6th – 11th grade students interested in the field of veterinary medicine. Camps are offered by age group. Junior Vet Camp is for rising 6th – 8th graders and Senior Vet Camp is for rising 9th – 11th graders.
Camp participants will gain hands-on experience in classrooms, laboratories, and outdoor facilities that include the raptor, equine, dairy, and beef units. Students will learn about public health, food animals, wildlife, anatomy, imaging, and first aid, as well as gain valuable mentoring about careers in veterinary medicine.
Three sessions are offered this summer: Junior, July 10-15; Senior, June 5-10 and July 10-15. Registration and information is contained on the Office of Professional and Continuing Education website (http://www.auburn.edu/outreach/opce/summerexperience/vetcamp.htm).
Personnel with the Healthy Tigers Wellness Initiative came to the CVM campus on Feb. 23 for health screenings. The Auburn University Department of Payroll and Employee Benefits is continuing the healthcare benefit for Auburn University employees who subscribe to Auburn University's Blue Cross/Blue Shield health insurance plan for the benefit year 2012. Employees who elect to take advantage of the Healthy Tigers Wellness Initiative can earn a $25 per month credit on their health insurance premiums (up to $300 per year) by participating in a health and wellness screening program that will continue to be coordinated by the Auburn University Pharmaceutical Care Center (AUPCC) located in 2155 Walker Building, Harrison School of Pharmacy.
The health screenings include completing an optional short health and wellness questionnaire, having a fingerstick blood test performed to check cholesterol and blood sugar levels, getting a blood pressure measurement, and participating in an optional height, weight, body mass index (BMI) and percent body fat analysis.
In addition to the employee screening, spouses who are covered under the AU BCBS insurance (family plan) will be required to be screened for the 2012 benefit year. Appointments may be scheduled online through the Healthy Tigers website. Those who do not have internet access may call the AUPCC at 844-4099. Clinics are scheduled for locations across the main campus and another will be held at the CVM this year.

The Macon County Humane Society (MCHS) was one of the charities supported by VictoryLand. When the bingo facility stopped operating in August, the organization lost $25,000 in funding and the only money the organization allocated to care for nearly 300 dogs and cats each year.
A "Strummin’ for Strays" benefit is to be held Sunday, April 3, at the War Eagle Supper Club. All door cover charges will go to MCHS. There will be no membership fee that day and anyone 18 and older is welcome. Adam Hood, Chris Posey, Joe Bagley, and various others will perform. The event begins at 2 p.m. and lasts until around 9 p.m. Prizes such as gift cards and items from area retailers will be awarded to individuals who bring in items from the MCHS wish list. An individual who brings in the minimum of any item will be entered into the giveaway. If an individual brings in more than one item, they will be entered twice.
