Research and DevelopmentThe CDRI has a rich history in detection dog research and development. We have conducted research and provided solutions for foreign and domestic military, government agency, and private industry applications. Our research has been conducted research in many different areas including exercise physiology, olfaction, training, conditioning, nutrition, biomechanics, general performance, and field and clinical veterinary medicine. We have developed advanced training, conditioning, and search protocols that have drastically improved the performance of detection dogs. In addition, the CDRI has developed and continues to innovate new methods to employ dogs by targeting the unique characteristics and abilities of various breeds and bloodlines. Continued research and constant evaluation, of our program, allows us to be a leader in the detection dog industry. Upholding superior standards for our dogs, employing an experienced staff, and utilizing the strengths of the experts at the AU College of Veterinary Medicine, we have been able to develop and innovate unique and novel applications for detection dogs. We recognize that the threat of narcotics and explosives detection constantly changes. In order to properly defend, protect, and deter such threats we must constantly evaluate, evolve, and develop new approaches to detection. Recently we have developed an Improvised Explosives Detection Dog, a Vapor Wake Detection Dog, and a Vapor Tracking Detection Dog. These novel approaches and unique abilities have placed our dogs in vital roles, such as protecting the president during the presidential inauguration and the US Capitol building, as well as helping protect soldiers and civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan. We have been able to provide superior conditioning and health, for our dogs, through the guidance of our Department’s Veterinary Sports Medicine Program. We employ the P3 philosophy of conditioning, which applies a progressive physiological, psychological, and physical approach to conditioning. This type of conditioning helps lengthen the dog’s career and provides a physical structure that is less prone to break down. Our dogs are known for their durability and endurance which has been proven in the extreme environments of Iraq. Our proven track record illustrates why we are a leader in research and development, in the canine detection industry. |
