OTHER CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE DIABETIC PATIENT
As several conditions predispose to the development of diabetes or loss
of diabetic regulation, so does diabetes predispose to the development
of other conditions.
-
Urinary tract infections:kidney infections, particularly, can be smoldering
and insidious, and may result in serious irreparable damage to either or
both kidneys.
-
Cataracts: although cataracts can be surgically addressed, it is important
to realize that insulin adjustments and therefore blood glucose levels
may be temporarily altered during the procedure and some degree of dysregulation
is likely to occur for a few days after the surgery. Also, diabetic patients
should be reasonably well adjusted to their disease prior to surgery; ketotic
animals do not make good candidates for anesthesia or further physiologic
stress.
