INSULIN SYRINGES

Specific insulin formulations must be administered with the appropriate insulin syringe which matches the concentration of insulin used. The concentration of any particular formulation is marked on the vial as U-100 (100 units per milliliter), U-40 (40 units per milliliter), etc. All U-100 insulins must be administered using U-100 syringes and all U-40 formulations of insulin must be administered using U-40 syringes, or severe dosage errors may result. The size of the needles vary from 26 gauge to 29 gauge in diameter. The volume of insulin accommodated also varies between syringes, from ? cc (1 cc is the same as 1 milliliter or ml) capacity (25 units of a U-100 insulin),  ?  cc capacity (30 units of a U-100 insulin),  ?  cc capacity (50 units of a U-100 insulin) to 1cc (100 units of a U-100 insulin). U-40 syringes all accommodate 1 cc of U-40 insulin.
