Veterinary Oncologist

Job Description

The Animal Emergency and Specialty Center (AESC) is seeking a board certified or board-eligible medical oncologist to join our growing team of specialists.  The successful candidate will join a vibrant team that includes a medical oncologist, two criticalists, two surgeons, five emergency doctors and dedicated support staff.  The AESC is a state of the art facility that opened in 2009 and sees over 12,000 cases annually.  We function as both a 24-hour small animal emergency and critical care hospital as well as a specialty referral center.  Our 11,000 square foot facility is fully equipped with a complete array of advanced diagnostic, therapeutic, and monitoring equipment.   The oncology service includes an Axxent electronic radiation unit, Thermofield hyperthermia system, chemotherapy pharmacy, chemotherapy biosafety hoods (2), video microscopy, ultrasound, digital radiography, conference room, clinical research laboratory, and individual office space.  Complete laboratory services are also available in house.  In addition, the AESC offers a complete array of imaging modalities including a GE light speed multi-slice helical CT scanner and off-site MRI capability.  The hospital also has extensive support for minimally invasive procedures including video endoscopy, thoracoscopy, laparoscopy, and rhinoscopy.  Our surgeons are skilled and equipped for surgical oncology procedures.  To complement these procedures we use some of the latest technology including a 30W ultra pulse laser and electrosurgical units.

The AESC will serve as the East Tennessee veterinary specialty hospital for veterinary students in the College of Veterinary and Comparative Medicine at Lincoln Memorial University (LMU-CVCM).  The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include oncology case management, communicating with referring veterinarians, and clinical teaching of students, interns and residents. Clinical effort is anticipated to be 80%.  In addition to providing clinical oncology services at the AESC, the selected candidate will have the opportunity to build an oncology clinical research program in collaboration with the LMU-CVCM and to participate in didactic teaching and CE opportunities.

The AESC is situated just outside of the city of Knoxville; we are just an hour’s drive away from the Smoky Mountains and minutes away from many of the numerous lakes in the area.  Tennessee offers a multitude of outdoor activities including skiing and snowboarding, kayaking and white water rafting, fishing, and countless hiking and biking trails throughout the nearby Smoky Mountains National Park. We do not have state income tax and the cost of living is much lower than many areas of the country. This is a safe area with excellent schools and is a great place to raise a family.

Applicants for this position must have a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree and be eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Tennessee. Specialty board certification in medical oncology is preferred but board-eligible candidates will be considered. The candidate should have excellent communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively with other clinicians and staff.  Salary and benefits are negotiable and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
