Equine Clinical Research

The mission of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine Equine Health Research Program (EHRP) is to improve equine health through high quality research. To fulfill this purpose, the program supports the interaction of scientists, veterinarians, and students to cultivate and integrate translational and clinical research. Through this collaborative effort, new discoveries in relation to equine disease and treatments can be delivered to the equine patient. 

The equine research program strengths are the investigation of anesthetics, antibiotics and pain medications, endocrinology, metabolic disease, orthopedics, and podiatry. Goals achieved within these studies are accomplished through the collaboration with other groups on the Auburn campus, such as the Boshell Diabetes and Metabolic Disease Research Group, Harrison School of Pharmacy, Endocrine Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, and Veterinary Sports Medicine Program. EHRP achievements include development of techniques in non-invasive abdominal surgery, abdominal pressure monitoring of horses suffering from colic, improved joint and nerve anesthesia associated with lameness exams, enhanced anesthetic regimens, and improved endocrine diagnostic testing methods. Current studies consist of investigations into the molecular pathophysiology of equine metabolic syndrome, the response of the hoof to disease and exercise, diagnosis of equine adrenal and pituitary disease, new models and treatments for tendon and joint injury, and new drug regimens and drug delivery systems for pain management.
