Dr. Hanson graduated with honors from the University of Georgia with a double major in biology and animal science in 1979, all while serving as a scholarship athlete in swimming.  Professional studies at the University of Georgia earned him a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1983.  He completed an equine medicine and surgery internship at Cornell University in 1984, and completed his residency in equine surgery at the University of Florida in 1987.  Dr. Hanson was an assistant professor in large animal surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine from 1987-1990.  He gained invaluable experience as an equine surgeon and practitioner in Charlottesville, Virginia for 2 years working on sport and race horses.  He joined the surgical faculty at Auburn University in 1992, and is currently a Professor of Equine Surgery and Lameness.  Dr. Hanson provides clinical service in surgical issues and lameness conditions related to the horse. 

Dr. Hanson achieved board certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1990 and the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2003.  He is the author of over 180 scientific articles, abstracts, presentations, and book chapters related to equine surgery, lameness and critical care.  Dr. Hanson won the prestigious Speaker of the Year Award from the North American Veterinary Conference.  He has spoken internationally in England, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, and Mexico in topics related to equine surgery, critical care, and lameness.  Dr. Hanson is the director of the equine surgical residency program and director of the equine critical care fellowship program.  He performs clinical service to clients, research and didactic teaching to first through fourth year veterinary students in the Department of Clinical Sciences.  In his free time he enjoys competitive swimming and training.
