Frederic J. Hoerr, DVM, MS, PhD, Diplomate ACVP, ACPV

Dr. Hoerr received his DVM, MS, and PhD degrees from Purdue University, with postgraduate residency and research training in avian diseases and veterinary pathology.  He completed the Master’s Degree under the direction of Dr. R. W. Winterfield, and his Ph. D. degree under the direction of Dr. W. W. Carlton.  He joined the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries in 1980, to develop a poultry disease diagnostic program for the C. S. Roberts Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Auburn.  He was appointed Laboratory Director in 1987, and continues in that capacity. Dr. Hoerr provides poultry diagnostic services with the state laboratory, including necropsy, histopathology, and coordinating case investigations. He oversaw the design and construction of the Thompson Bishop Sparks State Diagnostic Laboratory in Auburn, a Biosafety Level II/III facility that opened in May 2006.  Dr. Hoerr holds a joint appointment as Professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Pathobiology. He is the course coordinator and teaches avian diseases in VMED 5330, Multispecies Medicine in the 3rd year professional core curriculum. A member of the Auburn University Graduate Faculty, Dr. Hoerr has participated on 9 MS and 10 PhD committees. He collaborates in applied research of poultry diseases, and in 2005, received the Norden Distinguished Research Award. Dr. Hoerr served as President of the American College of Poultry Veterinarians in 2004, and is currently President-Elect of the American Association of Avian Pathologists.

Research Interests

My research interests stem directly from current issues in poultry health in Alabama, including those presented to the state diagnostic laboratories, and to colleagues at Auburn University. Working with researchers in veterinary medicine and poultry science, we have investigated cryptosporidiosis, aflatoxicosis, infectious bronchitis, infectious bursal disease, chicken infectious anemia, pigeon paramyxovirus, immunogenetics of broilers, skeletal diseases, coliform cellulitis, diagnosis and pathogenesis of mycoplasmosis, viral enteric diseases, salmonellosis, avian influenza, conditions identified at processing, poultry pharmacology, and diseases of raptors.
