This six-month position is open to individuals with a DVM, VMD, or equivalent foreign degree and who have already completed a rotating small animal internship or have several years of emergency experience and are seeking additional training in preparation for application to an emergency and critical care residency position. This individual will be employed through Auburn University Temporary Employment Services.
The successful candidate would become part of the Auburn University Emergency and Critical Care Service and would be expected to have a 100% clinical assignment. The service is staffed by 1 ACVECC Diplomate, 3 ACVECC residents, 5 rotating small animal interns, 1 Critical Care Nursing Supervisor (VTS-ECC), and 17 dedicated intensive and intermediate care unit technicians. The individual selected will have primary case responsibility and intensive patient management is encouraged and expected. The Auburn University Emergency and Critical Care Service is a 24 hour same-day referral center designed to serve the needs of veterinarians in the Southeast. The Intensive Care Unit is fully staffed 24/7 by a staff of full-time veterinary technicians and a Critical Care Nursing Supervisor. A STAT lab is available for hematology, chemistries, blood gases, electrolytes, blood lactate, coagulation profiles, and cytology. The service is supported by a full-service radiology section with capabilities that include radiology, ultrasonography, fluoroscopy, CT and MRI. Monitoring capabilities include telemetry, pulse oximetry, end tidal CO2, direct and indirect blood pressure, colloid osmotic pressure, urine output, and central venous pressure. Recent acquisitions include continuous renal replacement therapy and thromboelastography.
This position is designed to foster the selected candidate’s experience in emergency and critical care. The intern will be under the supervision of an ACVECC Diplomate and will be paired with either a Diplomate or resident for daily clinical support and mentoring. Duties will include but are not limited to: assisting in receiving referral and emergency cases, monitoring patients in ICU and Intermediate Care (IMC), teaching and assisting interns on overnight emergency rotations, teaching ICU and IMC technicians, instruction of fourth year veterinary students and participation in student rounds, the department wide intern/resident seminar series, and the emergency and critical care resident rounds and journal club.
