Professor of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine (Assistant, Associate or Full)

Responsibilities: The successful candidates will be expected to participate in teaching and clinical service.  Teaching responsibilities include the clinical and didactic instructional activities of the professional veterinary medicine and postgraduate training programs related to emergency and critical care medicine.  Clinical service and research responsibilities are negotiable and will depend on the successful candidate’s interests and the type of appointment, i.e. clinical vs. tenure track appointment.  There is ample opportunity to participate in established research programs on campus. Construction began on a new Small Animal Veterinary Teaching Hospital in January 2012 and is scheduled for completion in January of 2014. Expanded facilities for an intensive care unit, intermediate care unit, and emergency room are included in the plans.

Requirements/Qualifications:  Qualified applicants must hold a DVM or equivalent degree, have completed residency training in the American College of Veterinary Emergency Critical Care (ACVECC), and be a Diplomate of ACVECC or qualified to sit for the ACVECC certifying examination.  For a tenure-track position, research experience is preferred.  The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. Excellent communication skills are required in small group as well as large lecture hall settings.

Facility Description:  The Auburn University Critical Care Program is a 24 hour same-day referral center designed to serve the needs of veterinarians in the Southeast.  The Intensive Care Unit of the Small Animal Teaching Hospital includes three ACVECC faculty, three ACVECC residents, one emergency and critical care intern, five rotating interns, one Critical Care Nursing Supervisor (VTS-ECC) and 17 intensive care and intermediate care unit veterinary technicians.  A STAT lab is available for hematology, chemistries, blood gases, electrolytes, blood lactate, and coagulation profiles.  Monitoring capabilities include telemetry, pulse oximetry, end tidal CO₂, direct and indirect blood pressure, colloid osmotic pressure, urine output, and central venous pressure monitoring. Recent acquisitions include continuous renal replacement therapy and thromboelastography. 

About the area: The College of Veterinary Medicine is located on the edge of the Auburn University campus, in the east central Alabama community of Auburn-Opelika.  Collaborations with individuals in other Veterinary College departments, on the main campus, and at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Emory University Medical Schools (Atlanta, GA) are frequent.
