AUBURN, Ala. – On a day when thousands gathered to celebrate Auburn University’s present-day athletes, some gathered to celebrate athletes from Auburn’s past.

Five former athletes and an athletic trainer were presented with plaques during a breakfast ceremony Saturday morning. Duplicates of those same plaques will be placed along the Tiger Trail in downtown Auburn.

This year marks the 16th year of the Tiger Trail program, which is known as a sort of AU athletics walk of fame. To date, 102 athletes, coaches and athletic administrators have been honored with their own granite plaque placed into the sidewalks along College Street and Magnolia Avenue.

“This is undoubtedly one of the most special days that we get to celebrate great Auburn athletes and those who have been a part of this athletic department and make it great over the years,” said Auburn Chamber of Commerce Chairman Bill Hutto.

Among those honored with a plaque was Sarah Wentworth, a former Auburn gymnast who was called “the best gymnast in Auburn’s history” by former AU athletic director David Housel.

Wentworth, who was named the 2000 SEC Gymnast of the Year, was also the first gymnast to be given a plaque on the Tiger Trail.

“I’m just so honored to be here today,” she said. “ … All of you made my time here (at Auburn) just amazing.”

John Powell, Baseball America All-American in 1993, shared Wentworth’s sentiments.

“It’s just a real honor to be associated with these people, and I dearly love you guys will all my heart,” he said.

Powell was an AU pitcher from 1990 to 1994 and collected 602 strikeouts for the Tigers.

Other inductees included: Jackie Bushman, men’s tennis from 1974-1977; Terry Henley, AU football team running back from 1970-1972; Larry Nichols, AU baseball team center fielder from 1960-1962; and Hub Waldrop, athletic trainer from 1960-2005.
