Date: 6/11/2012 11:18 am

On May 22 the Birmingham Zoo presented Auburn University graduate Carl E. Grimmett, D.V.M., ’80 with its Good Egg Award. The zoo hosts an annual event recognizing extramural veterinarians, physicians, and support staff who provide medical expertise and diagnostics beyond the scope of the zoo’s on-grounds facilities.

“These veterinarians, physicians, and support staff represent the best Birmingham has to offer, but every year one person stands out as a true star,” said Clayton Hilton, D.V.M., vice president of animal care and conservation and a 1997 Auburn University graduate. “We decided to recognize that person by providing a Good Egg Award.”

Dr. Grimmett of Grayson Valley Pet Clinic in Trussville is the recipient of this year’s Good Egg Award - an ostrich egg on a hand-carved stand.  Dr. Grimmett has served as the on-call veterinarian for the Birmingham Zoo for approximately 20 years.

“This service allows our Staff Veterinarian Dr. Stephanie McCain and me to attend continuing education and other such events while maintaining a continuum of care for our animals.  Additionally, Dr. Grimmett often allows us to use his equipment, clinic space, supplies, and medications when the need arises,” said Dr. Hilton.  “He has a keen clinical eye and he is a good sounding board for discussing cases.  He is an all-around nice person.”

After graduating from Auburn’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 1980, Dr. Grimmett practiced with another veterinarian before opening Grayson Valley Pet Clinic in 1982.  He specializes in small animal medicine, surgery, ultrasound, and endoscopy.  His volunteer work with the Birmingham Zoo and the Wildlife Rescue Service has given him an increased knowledge of exotic and unusual animals.

The Birmingham Zoo’s mission is inspiring passion for the natural world through emphasizing conservation, education, scientific study and recreation in all aspects of its exhibits, programs facilities and activities.
