Lectures on December 1 at Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine explore the veterinarian’s continuing role in the HIV/AIDS epidemic.  The symposium begins at 11 a.m. in Goodwin-Overton Auditorium on the college campus located at 1180 Wire Road.

April Truett, a physician with Montgomery AIDS Outreach, will speak about specific zoonoses – infectious diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans – in which she counsels her patients. 

Walter Bradley, a behavioral psychologist with AID Atlanta, will discuss the emotional effects of HIV/AIDS and the importance of allowing HIV positive patients retain their pets when pet owners are immunocompromised.

The veterinary program at Auburn is the oldest in the South and the nation’s seventh oldest.  More than 6,160 doctors of veterinary medicine have graduated since the first degrees were officially awarded in 1909.
