Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine's Open House on April 24 offers Opportunities for Scouts

Date: 3/2/2010 10:57 am

Not only can you learn about careers during the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine's Open House on Saturday, April 24, but the free event offers two scouting opportunities. Boy Scouts can work on the Veterinary Medicine Merit Badge and Cub Scouts can receive a certificate in Wildlife Conservation.

"Get a Better View of Veterinary Medicine" is a student-organized event which shares information about careers in veterinary medicine and activities about the college. Activities begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 2 p.m., but Scouts should bring their Merit Badge Blue Card and arrive before 10 a.m. to complete the required activities. Logan Botzman serves as Merit Badge counselor (270-293-2591, ljb0005@auburn.edu).

Open House features a variety of fun and educational activities for all ages. All events take place on the college campus at 1130 Wire Road in Auburn.

High school and college students can talk with counselors about selecting courses for a future in veterinary medicine throughout the day. A session at 10:30 a.m. covers admission information and career opportunities.

Children with a favorite stuffed animal in need of repair can help veterinary students practice their surgical skills during the popular Teddy Bear Surgery. An informational scavenger hunt helps everyone learn as they explore exhibits around the college.

Family activities include a canine, bovine, and equine parade of breeds, and birds of prey from the Southeastern Raptor Center.

Presentations and lectures by students and faculty include an ambulatory truck, a CPR demonstration, a portable dairy, and "What's a Radiograph?"

A continuous program since 1892, the veterinary program at Auburn University is the oldest in the South and the seventh oldest in the nation. For more information on Open House, visit vetmed.auburn.edu, or call (334) 844-2685.
