Haroldo Toro Selected as a Research Ambassador for Study and Research in Germany
The German Academic Exchange Service [Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD)] has selected Haroldo Toro, D.V.M., Ph.D., of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine to serve as a research ambassador for study and research in Germany for the 2012-13 academic year. Dr. Toro is a professor of avian diseases in the Department of Pathobiology.

Summer Safety Tips for Pets
Summer - a time when everyone is more active and more likely to be outside, but also a time that can be dangerous for pets.  The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine and its Small Animal Teaching Hospital offers some safety tips for your pets.

Canine Detection Team Graduation Ceremony is July 6
The Auburn University Canine Detection Training Center, part of the College of Veterinary Medicine, will hold a team graduation ceremony July 6 at 1 p.m. to honor handlers and dogs graduating from the Vapor Wake Detection training program. During the 13-week course handlers are paired with dogs bred and trained specifically for the program.

Auburn Names Boosinger Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
AUBURN UNIVERSITY – Following a national search, Auburn University President Jay Gogue has selected Timothy Boosinger as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Boosinger's appointment was approved by the Auburn Board of Trustees at its June 22 meeting.

Dr. Bettina Schemera Named Associate Director of Lab Animal Health
The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine has named Bettina Schemera, D.V.M., Ph.D., as associate director of the Division of Laboratory Animal Health.  

Dr. David G. Pugh is Food Animal Continuing Educator of the Year
Attendees of the 84th Annual Western Veterinary Conference voted Dr. D. G. Pugh of Auburn University as the Food Animal Continuing Educator of the Year.  The honor acknowledges his expertise, communication skills, and outstanding commitment to the veterinary profession.

Auburn Graduate Carl Grimmett ’80 is Birmingham Zoo’s “Good Egg”
On May 22 the Birmingham Zoo presented Auburn University graduate Carl E. Grimmett, D.V.M., ’80 with its Good Egg Award. The zoo hosts an annual event recognizing extramural veterinarians, physicians, and support staff who provide medical expertise and diagnostics beyond the scope of the zoo’s on-grounds facilities.

Bald Eagle to be Released Back into the Wild in Tifton, Ga., June 16
The Southeastern Raptor Center and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources are releasing a bald eagle back into the wild on June 16 at 10 a.m. (EST) near Tifton, Ga.  The public is invited to view the release at the Paradise Public Fishing Area.

Dr. Ray Dillon to Receive Inaugural ACVIM Foundation Distinguished Service Award
The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine will present Ray Dillon, D.V.M., of Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine with the inaugural ACVIM Foundation Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Dillon will be honored May 31 during the awards luncheon of the 2012 ACVIM Forum held May 30 through June 2 in New Orleans at the New Orleans Convention Center.

Veterinary Parasitology Specialty Recognized— Byron Blagburn Named Honorary Diplomate
The executive board of the American Veterinary Medical Association has granted provisional recognition for the veterinary parasitology specialty under the auspices of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists (ACVM). 

Veterinary Parasitology Specialty Recognized— Auburn Veterinarian is Charter Member
The executive board of the American Veterinary Medical Association has granted provisional recognition for the veterinary parasitology specialty under the auspices of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists.  With this recognition, approximately 20 veterinary parasitologists have been designated as charter members of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists (ACVM).  

2012 Wilford S. Bailey Distinguished Alumni Named
AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine has named three of its graduates as 2012 Wilford S. Bailey Distinguished Alumni in honor of their contributions to animal welfare, the profession, and their communities.

Auburn University Scientists to Test Anti-Tumor Properties of New Drug
The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine and Nuovo Biologics, a biotechnology company, have announced a collaborative research agreement to study a new anti-cancer drug which also has antiviral properties.

Dr. Daniel Scruggs Receives the El Toro Award for Excellence in Food Animal Medicine
AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine has selected Daniel Scruggs, D.V.M., as the 2012 recipient of the El Toro Award for Excellence in Food Animal Medicine. The award recognizes veterinarians, who through their contributions to food animal practice, organized veterinary medicine, high ideals, and dedication to the production of food animals, serve as role models for veterinary students.

Auburn’s Tatiana Samoylova Receives Coveted Michelson Grant from Found Animals Foundation
Auburn, Ala. - Tatiana Samoylova, an associate research professor at the Scott-Ritchey Research Center at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, has received a two-year, $412,106 Michelson Grant from the Found Animals Foundation.

Auburn University will hold the fifth annual Boshell Diabetes Research Day on Friday, March 2, at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center, bringing together experts from around the U.S. to present current topics related to diabetes and the role of obesity in its development.

Auburn Canines Help in Search for Everglades’ Pythons
Detection dogs trained by Auburn University were used to find Burmese pythons in Everglades National Park during a recent study on ways to manage and eradicate these nonnative, invasive snakes.

Reproductive Biologist is Goodwin Distinguished Lecturer
Louis J. Guillette Jr., Ph.D., a renowned expert in environmental toxicology and a reproductive biologist, will be the Joy Goodwin Distinguished Lecturer at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine on March 8. Guillette’s research presentation, “Contaminants and the Developing Ovary: Lessons for Human Health, will be at 11 a.m. in 230 Greene Hall. He will present the distinguished lecture, “Wildlife as Sentinels of Human Health,” at 4 p.m. in Overton Auditorium.

Pinkert Elected as AAAS Fellow
In November 2011, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Council elected 539 members as Fellows of AAAS. These individuals will be recognized for their contributions to science and technology at the Fellows Forum to be held February 18, 2012, during the AAAS Annual Meeting in Vancouver, Canada.

Professor of Small Animal Critical Care Passes Away
Dr. Douglass K. Macintire, P.B. Griffin Distinguished Professor of Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, in Auburn, Ala. Dr. Macintire, who retired Dec. 1 with 21 years of service to the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, was internationally recognized for her expertise in critical care medicine and in infectious diseases in small animals.
