Third-Year Veterinary Student Receives Travel Fellowship
J. Oliver Irons of Lewisburg, W.V., a third-year veterinary student at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, recently received the highly coveted International Stockmen’s Educational Foundation (ISEF) Travel Fellowship to the 2012 International Livestock Congress in Denver, Colo., on Jan. 10.

Auburn University and Vaxin Receive $1 Million Grant
Vaxin Inc., a clinical stage vaccine development company, and the Scott-Ritchey Research Center at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine announce a $1 million Michelson Grant award from the Found Animals Foundation to continue development of a vaccine that may provide an alternative to surgical spay and neuter for cats and dogs.

Alpha Psi Fraternity Pledges $1 Million to College of Veterinary Medicine
The Theta chapter of Alpha Psi has pledged $1 million over the next 10 years benefitting the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. The $1 million gift will be used toward enhancing the facilities at the college located on Wire Road.

Critical Care Case of the Year
A six-year-old yellow Labrador retriever that stayed 34 days in intensive care is the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Critical Care Case of the Year.

Bald Eagle to be Released at Paul M. Grist State Park in Selma
The Southeastern Raptor Center will release a bald eagle into the wild at the Paul M. Grist State Park in Selma on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 9 a.m. The public is invited to view the release.

Pratt-Carden Drive Dedication Occurs Oct. 28 at Southeastern Raptor Center
A dedication ceremony for Pratt-Carden Drive at the Southeastern Raptor Center takes place Friday, Oct. 28, at 3 p.m. at the Edgar B. Carter Educational Amphitheater. The newly paved road is named for 1953 veterinary medicine alumnus Bruce G. Pratt of Beaufort, S.C., and his daughter, Sarah "Tosh" Carden, a 1993 Auburn horticulture graduate, also of Beaufort.

Patricia Kennedy-Arrington is Named 2011 Kentucky Veterinarian of the Year
The Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association has named Patricia Kennedy-Arrington as Kentucky Veterinarian of the Year. Kennedy-Arrington received the award during the 100th Annual Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association Meeting and 38th Mid-America Veterinary Conference held Oct. 7–9 in Louisville, Ky.

Auburn Graduate and Western Kentucky University Professor Jenks Britt Receives Merck Animal Health Mentor of the Year Award
DE SOTO, Kan., Sept. 30, 2011 – In recognition of his commitment to the animal-health industry and for inspiring students and others in veterinary medicine, Jenks Britt, D.V.M., D.A.B.V.P., Western Kentucky University Department of Agriculture professor, received the Mentor of the Year Award from the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) and Merck Animal Health.

CAPT Terri R. Clark became the 10th Chief Veterinarian for the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) on October 1, 2011. She was selected by Surgeon General Regina Benjamin.

Professor Secures Grant to Study Herbicide
Chad Foradori, assistant professor in the department of Anatomy, Pharmacology and Physiology at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, has received a grant from Syngenta Crop Protection Inc. to investigate the effects of atrazine exposure on liver metabolism and endocrine function.

Former Veterinary Medicine Administrator Passes Away
Charles D. Knecht, Professor Emeritus of Small Animal Surgery and Medicine and former head of the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Small Animal Clinic, died Tuesday, September 20 in Asheville, North Carolina.

Homeland Security Secretary Visits Auburn Canine Program
U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano visited the Auburn University Canine Detection Training Center on Monday, Aug. 22, for a first-hand look at bomb-sniffing dogs and the technology behind them.

American College of Theriogenologists Honors Dwight Wolfe with National Award
The American College of Theriogenologists has honored Dwight Wolfe, D.V.M., with the David E. Bartlett Award for his important contributions to the field of theriogenology.  Dr. Wolfe accepted the award August 11 during the 2011 Society for Theriogenology Annual Convention held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Southeastern Raptor Center Hosts “Football, Fans, & Feathers”
The Southeastern Raptor Center hosts educational, birds-in-flight raptor programs on Fridays before Auburn University home football games. Hawks, falcons, and eagles will be free-flown from flight towers allowing guests to see these raptors flying close.

Southeastern Raptor Center to Release Hawks at Woofstock August 27
The Southeastern Raptor Center will release hawks on Saturday, August 27, at Woofstock, an annual celebration for people and dogs sponsored by the Lee County Humane Society. The event takes place at Auburn’s Kiesel Park from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Owls and Hawks to be Released at Auburn’s Farewell Summer Block Party Aug. 4
The Southeastern Raptor Center, in collaboration with the City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Department, will release owls and hawks into the wild at Town Creek Park on Thursday, Aug. 4, at 6 p.m. as part of the Farewell Summer Block Party.

Dr. Patricia Rynders Named Director of Lab Animal Health

James Sartin is President-Elect of the American Society of Animal Science
James L. Sartin, who holds a joint appointment as professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Anatomy, Physiology, and Pharmacology and the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station, was recently elected as president-elect of the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS).

Nominations for Alumni Advisory Council Sought
The College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Advisory Council plays an integral role in guiding the college and raising private support for various activities. The council consists of twelve members and three officers. Members are elected for four years on a staggered-term basis, with one-fourth of the terms expiring each year.

1345 Pounds of Excitement - A Visit by the Wild Rose Pony Club Day Camp
For the past ten years, Erica Franklin has operated the Wild Rose Pony Club Day Camp in Phenix City, Alabama. Children, from the ages of 8-16 years, learn natural horsemanship skills as well as horse care and maintenance. Ground work with the horses is emphasized as the students learn both English and western riding disciplines.
