New Veterinary Teaching Hospital Named in Memory of the Baileys
The Board of Trustees of Auburn University has approved the naming of the future small animal teaching hospital for a former graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine and his wife.

AU's Tiger Trail Inducts CVM Graduate
Dr. Sarah Wentworth is a 2004 graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine. On April 16, she became the first gymnast to be given a plaque on Auburn’s Tiger Trail. Originally from Missouri, Dr. Wentworth is a veterinarian at Caldwell Mill Animal Clinic in Birmingham.

Dr. Jan K. Strother to Deliver Commencement Address
Dr. Jan K. Strother, a small animal veterinarian from Hartselle, Alabama, and vice president of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), will deliver the commencement address for the College of Veterinary Medicine’s 104th commencement on May 10. The ceremony begins at 6 p.m. in the Auburn Arena.

Third-Year Veterinary Student Kristin Griffin Receives P&G Scholarship Funds
Kristin Coleman Griffin of Wetumpka, a third-year veterinary student at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, is the recipient of a P&G scholarship.  P&G Pet Care is the maker of Iams, Eukanuba, and Natura pet food products.  The Association for Women Veterinarians Foundation (AWVF) selected Griffin as one of seven scholarship winners from a group of 112 applicants.

Veterinary Medicine Open House is April 16
Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine hosts Open House on Saturday, April 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The student-organized event shares information about careers in veterinary medicine and activities about the college.

Akingbemi Tapped as Study Section Member with Center for Scientific Review at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Benson T. Akingbemi, D.V.M., Ph.D., an Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine associate professor, has been chosen to serve as a member of the Cellular Molecular and Integrative Reproduction (CMIR) Study Section with the Center for Scientific Review. Membership on a study section provides an opportunity for participants to make significant contributions to the national biomedical research effort.

Auburn Veterinary Students Take Honors in SAVMA Symposium Competitions
The Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA) Symposium is held annually for veterinary students with participation by international vet students. U.C. Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in Davis, California, hosted the 2011 Symposium March 24-26. 

Large Animal Professor Robert Carson Inducted in Alabama Livestock Hall of Fame
The Alabama Cattlemen’s Association has honored Robert L. Carson, D.V.M., with induction in the Alabama Livestock Hall of Fame for a lifetime of service to the cattle industry. Carson accepted the award during the association’s annual convention held February 11 in Montgomery.

2011 Faculty Awards
Due to the generosity of donors and sponsors, the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine presented $350,000 in scholarships and awards to over 125 veterinary students on Honors Night on Feb. 17. Honors Night also recognized the outstanding teaching ability and research achievements of six faculty members: Dr. Betsy Welles, Dr. Ralph Henderson, Dr. Elaine Coleman, Dr. Ya-xiong Tao, Dr. Vitaly Vodyanoy, and Dr. Valery Petrenko. 

Auburn to Produce Next Generation Detection Canine
Auburn University is partnering with the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization, or JIEDDO, in an effort to stop improvised bombs in Afghanistan by providing a powerful detector tool:  bomb-sniffing canines.

Groundbreaking for New Teaching and Educational Wing
AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine breaks ground on a new small animal teaching hospital and educational wing on December 9, 2010. Festivities begin at 2 p.m. on the lawn adjacent to Overton Auditorium-Goodwin Student Center on the site of the classroom building expansion.

Scholarship, Research, and Awards – Phi Zeta Research Emphasis Day 2010
Research targeting the welfare and diseases of animals took center stage November 10 during Phi Zeta Research Emphasis Day. Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine veterinary and graduate students, interns, and residents presented their studies and findings in poster and lecture formats.

Southeastern Raptor Center to Release Bald Eagle Nov. 14 in Carroll County, Ga.
The Southeastern Raptor Center, part of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, will release a bald eagle back into the wild on Sunday, Nov. 14, at 10 a.m. (EST), at John Tanner State Park near Carrollton, Ga.  The public is invited to view the release.

Tiger Turns 30 with Birthday Party and Tribute on Homecoming Saturday, Nov. 6
A birthday party and a halftime tribute during Auburn University's homecoming game Nov. 6 will honor Tiger, War Eagle VI, on her 30th year.

Red-tailed Hawks to be Released at Storybook Farm Oct. 30
The Southeastern Raptor Center will release red-tailed hawks into the wild at Storybook Farm in Opelika on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 10 a.m.

Dr. Eva Sartin is Named 2010 Distinguished Alum
Eva Sartin, D.V.M., Ph.D., of Auburn is a named a 2010 Distinguished Alumni by the Oklahoma State University (OSU) Center for Veterinary Health Sciences. Dr. Sartin, a 1979 OSU graduate, will be honored Oct. 1 during the veterinary center’s Fall Veterinary Conference in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Southeastern Raptor Center’s Guardian Barn Owls Make Appearance Sept. 24
The Southeastern Raptor Center’s own “guardian” barn owls will be on view Sept. 24 beginning at 5 p.m. at the Carmike Wynnsong 16 before the movie release of Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole.

Red-tailed Hawks to be Released at Cheaha State Park
The Southeastern Raptor Center will release adult and juvenile red-tailed hawks into the wild at Cheaha State Park on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 9 a.m.

Carson Receives National Award for Theriogenology
SEATTLE, Wash. – The Sociey for Theriogenology honored Robert L. Carson, D.V.M., with the David E. Bartlett Award for his important contributions to the field of theriogenology. Dr. Carson accepted the award during the 2010 Therio Annual Conference held Sept. 1 in Seattle, Wash.

Southeastern Raptor Center Hosts “Football, Fans, & Feathers”
The Southeastern Raptor Center hosts educational, birds-in-flight raptor programs on Fridays before Auburn University home football games. Hawks, falcons, and eagles will be free-flown from flight towers allowing guests to see these raptors flying close.
