CVM Endowed Professorships Awarded
AUBURN - Fifty Auburn University faculty members were awarded endowed professorships on August 26 as part of a strategic initiative undertaken by Auburn President Jay Gogue to recognize the exceptional merit of existing Auburn faculty.

Auburn D.V.M. Receives Student Teaching Excellence Award - The First Faculty Member From a Veterinary School Outside the U.S.
August 2, 2010—Basseterre, St. Kitts—Mark D. Freeman, D.V.M., assistant professor of small animal surgery at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM), received the Student American Veterinary Medical Association’s (SAVMA) 2010 Teaching Excellence Award at the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Conference in Atlanta, Ga. Freeman is the first faculty member from a veterinary school outside the United States to receive this award.

Frederic J. Hoerr Honored for Ongoing Research in Poultry Disease and Health
Frederic J. Hoerr, D.V.M., Ph.D., director of the Alabama State Diagnostic Laboratory and a professor at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine where he has taught diseases of poultry since 1980, is the recipient of the Phibro Animal Health Excellence in Poultry Research Award for 2010.

Auburn University Students Named Morris Animal Foundation Veterinary Student Scholars
DENVER, Colo. — Morris Animal Foundation recently announced awards for 73 students from 36 schools in nine countries to participate in this year’s Veterinary Student Scholars (VSS) program. The students selected were awarded funding for research projects in the areas of small and large companion animal and wildlife health. This hands-on research experience will expose these students to research early in their careers, hopefully affecting their lives and the lives of the animals they study.

Amtrak Officials Recognized for Contributions to Canine Detection
AUBURN, Ala. – Amtrak’s chief of police and program manager are the first individuals to be recognized by the Auburn University Canine Detection Research Institute (CDRI) for their enduring contributions to canine detection.

Fledglings No More! Barn Owls to be Released
The Southeastern Raptor Center is collaborating with the City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Department to release more owls.  This public release involves Barn Owls and takes place September 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Town Creek   Park .

Red-Tailed Hawks to be Released into the Wild July 24
The Southeastern Raptor Center teams up with the Louise Kreher Forest Ecology Preserve to release red-tailed hawks back into the wild on Saturday, July 24, at 10 a.m. A brief program regarding the birds and raptors takes place before the release.

Fledglings No More!
The Southeastern Raptor Center , in collaboration with the City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Department, will release owls into the wild at Kiesel Park on July 8.

AUBURN , Ala. - Richard Daugherty, D.V.M., of Louisville , Tenn. , is a new member of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Advisory Council. Dr. Daugherty is a 1970 graduate of Auburn’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Marc Caldwell Receives Food Animal Incentive Award
Marc Caldwell, D.V.M., a resident at Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, is one of five veterinary postgraduates presented the 2010 Dr. Jeffrey W. Tyler Food Animal Incentive Award. Noted for his commitment to food animal practice, Dr. Caldwell received the award at the 82nd Annual Western Veterinary Conference, held February 14-18 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Not only can you learn about careers during the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine's Open House on Saturday, April 24, but the free event offers two scouting opportunities. Boy Scouts can work on the Veterinary Medicine Merit Badge and Cub Scouts can receive a certificate in Wildlife Conservation.

Six Honored with 2010 Faculty Teaching Awards
AUBURN, Ala. - Due to the generosity of donors and sponsors, the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine recently presented over $365,000 in scholarships and awards to over 125 veterinary students. Honors Night also recognized the outstanding teaching ability and research achievements of six faculty members: Drs. Dan Givens, Dwight Wolfe, Betsy Welles, Byron Blagburn, Dean Schwartz, and Doug Martin.

Veterinary Medicine Faculty Member Passes Away– Dr. Christine Carr Dykstra
Christine C. Dykstra, associate professor in the Department of Pathobiology, died Jan. 30 after a battle against metastatic breast cancer. Dr. Dykstra was a graduate of Sweetbriar College in Lynchburg, Va. She earned a master’s degree in microbiology from the University of Florida and a Ph.D. in genetics from the University of Georgia.

Call for Nominations Wilford S. Bailey Distinguished Alumnus Award
Dr. Wilford S. Bailey, a veterinary parasitologist, held a 50-year continuous faculty appointment at Auburn University after receiving his veterinary degree in 1942. He served in positions ranging from instructor to university president.  The Awards Committee of the Alumni Advisory Council is seeking nominations for the 2010 Wilford S. Bailey Distinguished Alumnus Awards.

Dr. J.T. Vaughan Named Distinguished Educator
The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) honors John Thomas Vaughan, D.V.M., with the annual Distinguished Educator Award for advancing the equine veterinary profession through impactful teaching and mentorship. Dr. Vaughan of Auburn accepted the award during the Dec. 8 President’s Luncheon at the 55th Convention in Las Vegas , Nevada .

Gillette Named Director of Animal Health Performance Program
The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine has named Robert L. Gillette, D.V.M., as director of the Animal Health Performance Program (AHPP).  AHPP includes the Canine Detection Research Institute (CDRI) and the Veterinary Sports Medicine Program.

$3.5 Million NIH Grant Advances Bid to Cure Tay-Sachs Disease
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded a $3.5-million grant to the Tay-Sachs Gene Therapy Consortium to continue research that may halt the fatal genetic disorder.

Auburn Veterinary Professor Receives Pamela Wells Sheffield Award
For her service and commitment to Auburn University , pathobiology professor Mary K. Boudreaux is the recipient of the 2009 Pamela Wells Sheffield Award. The award is to be presented during pre-game ceremonies Sept. 5 at Auburn ’s home football game against Louisiana Tech.

Veterinary Professor Receives Association's Highest Honor
The Alabama Veterinary Medical Association has presented the Distinguished Service Award to Dwight F. Wolfe, a food animal professor in Auburn ’s College of Veterinary Medicine . The award represents the association’s highest tribute. Wolfe is honored for his lifetime of strong leadership, his dedication to research, and for his impact on future veterinarians. He received his doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Auburn in 1977 and also holds a master’s degree in large animal surgery and medicine from Auburn . He is board-certified with the American College of Theriogenologists. Wolfe has been a member of the veterinary college faculty since 1980 and is a member of the Alabama Livestock Hall of Fame.
