Required undergraduate GPA:  Kentucky and Alabama residents must have a minimum grade point average of 2.50 on a 4.00 scale, with the minimum acceptable grade for required courses being C-minus. At-large applicants who do not classify as Alabama or Kentucky residents must have a 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale. 

Course completion deadline: prerequisite courses must be completed by June 15, prior to matriculation. 

Standardized examinations: Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test is required. Test scores must be received by November 1 and the exam must have been taken within the previous five calendar years.

In addition to completing the required pre-veterinary courses, students are strongly encouraged to work with one or more veterinarians to learn about the career opportunities and responsibilities within the profession. While work and animal experience are necessary for admission, it is important to remember that academic ability is essential. The Committee on Admissions is selecting students who they believe can be successful in a rigorous four year professional curriculum.

In addition to literature, disciplines in the humanities include (but are not limited to) philosophy, religious studies, speech, and foreign languages. Fine arts courses should emphasize history and appreciation rather than performance. Courses include art, music, theater and dance.


History, Social, Behavioral Science


        Social/behavioral science electives


Disciplines include (but are not limited to) anthropology, economics, geography, political science, psychology and sociology.


Mathematics Precalculus trig or higher




Biological and Physical Sciences


        Principles of Biology I with lab 
        Principles of Biology II with lab
    **Cell Biology
        Fundamentals of Chemistry with lab
        Organic Chemistry with lab
        Physics with lab 
  ***Animal Nutrition
        Science Electives+





  • *Students must complete a 6 semester hour sequence either in literature or in history.
  • **For students submitting applications prior to October 1, 2014, four additional hours of physics may be substituted for the cell biology requirement.
  • *** Course may be taken as an on-line course
  • +Science electives must be from the following list:

Comparative Anatomy, Genetics, Embryology, Mammalian or Animal Physiology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Histology, Reproductive Physiology, Parasitology, or Immunology.

Student's completing their undergraduate / pre-vet work at Auburn University must complete the requirements for the AU core which are more specific. Contact your Auburn Pre-Vet Advisor for more information.

The final grade in each course must be a "C-minus" or better. Requirements for the following categories listed in detail above will be waived if the student has a bachelor's degree:
