Established in 1892, the College of Veterinary Medicine is the oldest in the South and is the nation’s seventh oldest. It has presented 5,665 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees and it has alumni in all 50 states. More than 31,000 cases a year are treated through its teaching hospitals, where real-world training is provided to future veterinarians.
Award-winning research is being done in optical microscopes, anti-bioterrorism, small animal critical care, diabetes research, molecular biology, DNA-based vaccine development, cancer treatment, parasite control, in vitro fertilization, sports medicine, physical rehabilitation and equine reproduction.
The look of the campus is ever changing. The Charles Allen Cary Veterinary Medical Library underwent a major renovation in 2005, as did Overton Auditorium and Goodwin Student Center. A War Dog Tribute was recently dedicated in the college's new Centennial Garden where donors fund memorial pavers. The Southeastern Raptor Center opened a new 300-seat amphitheater in fall 2005, providing a place for educational programs about birds of prey. In 2003, the John Thomas Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital was dedicated, giving Auburn the most modern facility of its kind in the nation.
An annual Open House is held each April, so the public and potential students can learn more about the veterinary profession. Activities for all ages include a petting zoo, scientific exhibits, Teddy Bear surgery, tours of the college and many more events. |
