How to Admit a Horse to the Auburn University Emergency Service

If you have an equine emergency and if you have a veterinarian:

Please contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.  Your veterinarian can:

  1. Discuss with you options for the care and treatment of you emergency.
  2. Provide initial diagnostics and determine if your horse needs referral.
  3. Provide emergency stabilization for transport.
  4. Consult with Auburn University for referral.  Your veterinarian can contact a veterinarian at Auburn 24 hours a day to advise us of your horse’s condition and any treatments they have done.
  5. After discussion of your horse’s condition, your veterinarian or an auburn representative can relay to you an estimate of the costs and treatment options at Auburn University. Please keep in mind that each case is individual, and an accurate financial quote for diagnostics and treatment cannot be made until the horse is examined.  A MINIMUM DEPOSIT OF $600 WILL BE COLLECTED AT TIME OF ADMISSION.  IF YOUR ESTIMATE IS OVER THIS AMOUNT, 1/2 OF THE REMAINDER WILL BE COLLECTED UPON DEPARTURE.
  6. If you elect to have your horse referred, we ask that you provide the admissions desk with your information and phone numbers, estimated time of arrival, and call Auburn when you are 30 minutes away from the hospital.

If you have an emergency and you do not have a veterinarian, or if you cannot reach your veterinarian, or if Auburn University is your primary veterinarian:

  1. Call Auburn University at 334-844-4490.
  2. You will speak with our receptionist, who can take your information and provide directions if needed.  Let them know the nature of your emergency.  You will be asked to provide briefly information regarding your horse.
  3. You may be transferred to a veterinarian who can answer more complex questions and who can provide information on how to safely transport your horse to Auburn.
  4. When you decide to bring your horse to Auburn University, we can provide over the phone directions, a diagnostic plan to determine the cause of your horse’s problem, and an initial quote for these services.
