Case Name:

Red Maple Leaf Toxicosis

Signalment:

6-year old female Spanish mustang

Presenting Complaint and Patient History:

Colic and bloody urine were noted over the past 24 hours.  The horse is fed coastal hay and sweet feed, and is turned out daily on a lush pasture.  The owner reports that a large branch from a maple tree fell into the pasture approximately 2 weeks previously, and has not yet been cleared away.

Physical Examination:

Extremely pale mucous membranes, moderate tachycardia and tachypnea.  Mild to moderate abdominal discomfort.

Hematology Images:

Blood Smear 2

Blood smear 1

RBC morphology

Many eccentrocytes are seen in these images, and occasional ghost cells are present.  Eccentrocytes and pyknocytes form as a result of oxidative damage to the RBC membrane.  Ghost cells indicate that there is intravascular hemolysis.
