Signalment:

Juvenile Red-tailed hawk

Presenting Complaint and Patient History:

The bird was found on the ground with a broken wing.

Hematology Description

There is a moderate leukocytosis, and many macrogametocytes of Leukocytozoon are seen. Leukocytozoon is often found in blood smears from wild birds. Organisms are located intracellularly within erythrocytes and/or leukocytes. Most birds with Leukocytozoon are asymptomatic, but clinical signs of infection may include hemolytic anemia, weakness and tachypnea.
