Equine CCU Facilities and Equipment

The J.T. Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital is at the technological forefront for emergency care of the equine patient.  The facility includes a 5 stall Critical Care Unit (two adult ICU and three mare-foal stalls), with climate control, oxygen and suction available at each stall.

Two additional padded stalls are available for orphan foals in our nurse’s station, which overlooks all stalls in the CCU.  Our in-patient barns (Griffin Barn and the Kentucky Barn) also include mare-foal stalls and climate control, with round the clock nursing supervision.  Two padded stalls are available with hoists and slings for recumbent horses that cannot rise.

Our 4 stall isolation facility provides for separation of patients with contagious diseases, with additional remote monitoring by close circuit cameras in the CCU.

Our surgical facilities include three surgical suites for anesthetized patients, with inhalant anesthesia and advanced monitoring available for surgical procedures 24 hours a day.  A separate suite allows for standing surgeries, including laparoscopy.

Advanced equipment available for treatment and diagnosis of emergency illness includes:

  • Puritan Bennett Ventilator for foals
  • pulse oximetry monitor
  • videoendoscopy for upper respiratory, urinary, reprioductive and gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures
  • Game Ready hydrotherapy
  • specialized fluid delivery devices
  • computerized radiography providing the most detailed images of bone available
  • ultrasound for advanced imaging, including Doppler flow images of the heart
  • blood donors are available on site, with cross matching and blood typing services available
  • hematology laboratory is available for immediate analysis
  • full service clinicopathological laboratory for cultures and histopathology
  • minimally invasive surgical equipment for laparoscopy and arthroscopy
  • locking plates for minimally invasive fracture fixation
  • Ligasure vessel sealing device for advanced soft tissue procedures
  • Anderson sling for recumbent patients
