Elizabeth M. Whitley, DVM, PhD, DACVP

Dr. Elizabeth M. Whitley is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathobiology at Auburn University.  She earned a DVM degree in 1988 from the University of Florida, a M.S. degree in 1993 and a Ph.D. degree in 2001in Pathobiology from Auburn University.  She also trained as an anatomic pathologist at Auburn University and became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in 2004. 

Currently, Dr. Whitley teaches in the veterinary professional curriculum and serves as the training coordinator for the anatomic pathology residency program.  Her interests in diagnostic pathology include ophthalmic pathology and dermatopathology.

Research Interests

Dr. Whitley’s research focuses on innate and specific immunity associated with cancer and wound healing.  At present, her laboratory is using cell culture, immunohistochemical and molecular techniques to develop improved tools for use in the diagnosis and treatment of canine mast cell tumors.  Her laboratory is also collaborating with others in the Departments of Clinical Sciences and Entomology and Plant Pathology to develop a vaccine to protect cattle from horn fly infestation. In addition, Dr. Whitley serves as a pathologist on projects investigating targeted gene therapy approaches to lymphoma, osteosarcoma and melanoma as well as a project to investigate the endocrine malfunction in canine neoplasia and persistent bovine viral diarrhea virus infection in cattle.
