Barbara Wallner Kemppainen, PhD

Professor of Toxicology, joined the College of Veterinary Medicine in 1988. Her post-doctoral training at the US Department of Agriculture involved studying in vitro skin penetration and metabolism of fungal toxins. Dr. Kemppainen received her PhD from the University of Georgia. She teaches Veterinary Toxicology and a graduate course in fungal toxins. She has an active research program which is funded by Food Animal Health and Disease Research, and has received support from the US Department of Agriculture, US Army Medical Research Command, and the Mellon Foundation.

Research Interests

We are investigating the effects of culture conditions on the production of medical compounds by medical plants.  Our goal is to determine the optimum culture conditions  to produce  maximal amounts of medicinal compounds.  Some of the medicinal plants that we are studying are oyster mushrooms, Astragalus, turmeric, Spanish sage.  We are using high performance liquid chromatography to measure the medicinal compounds.
