War Dog Tribute
April 29, 2005
The College of Veterinary Medicine unveiled a War Dog Tribute sculpture in April to pay respect to all dogs that serve mankind and to honor all alumni who have served in the military.
Donated by Betsy Putney of Woodland Hills, California, the bronze sculpture was inspired by the World War II experiences of her late husband, veterinarian Dr. William Putney ’43. He was the commanding officer of the 3rd Marine War Dog Platoon that helped liberate the island of Guam. He later penned his experiences into a book titled “Always Faithful.”
Twenty-five dogs that gave their lives in the effort are listed on the sculpture, which is similar to a monument established by Dr. Putney on Guam in 1994. Artist Susan Bahary sculpted the original and Auburn's tribute as part of her nine limited editions honoring the dogs.
Auburn's dedication featured addresses by retired U.S. Marine Commandant Carl Mundy, a 1957 Auburn business school graduate, and WWII dog handler Dale Quillen, who served with Dr. Putney. Also attending were fellow handlers Bruce Wellington and Thurman Clark.
The War Dog Tribute is the first structure in the college's new Centennial Garden, which offers an opportunity for donors to make memorial donations to fund trees, engraved granite pavers, a wall of honor, benches and sculptures.
