THE ONCOLOGY PROGRAM
The goals of the oncology team at Auburn University are to help animals with cancer achieve longer, happier lives. While cure is not possible in all instances of cancer, usually some form of therapy can be offered to improve the patient's quality of life.
Cancer treatment usually involves the use of surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy in combination. The pet with cancer who comes to Auburn University will be discussed by a surgical, radiation, and medical oncologist to determine the best treatment for each animal.
The exact therapy recommended is based on the tumor type, the extent of disease, the animal's organ reserves/general health, and client factors.
While some experimental therapy may be available at select times, most patients are not on funded clinical trials, and the owner must bear the expense of therapy. No patient is treated with anything other than standard therapy without the express consent of the owner.
