Residency Program

The Large Animal Surgery and Medicine sections offer three year clinical residencies as sanctioned by theAmerican College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, the American College of Theriogenology and the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. Candidates for admission to the residency programs must be graduates of an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine and have completed an internship or have equivalent practice experience. Preference will be given to candidates with one or more years of practice experience. Candidates must enroll in the Graduate School of Auburn University and pursue a course of graduate study leading to the master of science or doctoral degrees. Residents are expected to participate in resident rounds and assist with teaching and the continuing education efforts.Stipends are $23,520 per annum with $500 annual increases. Twenty days annual leave and appropriate sick leave are available. Annual leave may not be taken during the final two weeks of the residency program. A medical insurance plan is provided with premiums shared by the resident and the University. The premium for AVMA Professional Liability Insurance is paid by the Department of Clinical Sciences.


THERIOGENOLOGY RESIDENCY
The theriogenology resident receives training and mentoring by diplomates with bovine, equine, small ruminant, and llama interests to become eligible to take the examination of the American College of Theriogenologists (ACT). The resident rotates between in-patient, outpatient, and on-farm large animal theriogenology services. Opportunities exist for experiences in surgery, medicine, population medicine, clinical nutrition and field service practice through our faculty. Additional opportunities are in the areas of endocrinology, pathology, reproductive physiology and livestock production in collaboration with faculty in other departments in the College of Veterinary Medicine and in theDepartments of Animal and Dairy Sciences of the College of Agriculture. Regularly scheduled seminars are utilized to insure that ACT board candidates are exposed to all the materials required to pass the ACT examination. In collaboration with Animal Health Research, the department offers commercial bovine embryo transfer, in-vitro fertilization and advanced reproductive technologies. There are active research programs in bull breeding soundness and fescue reproductive toxicity in mares. There is active collaboration in uterine development and reproductive biology with the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences and theDepartment of Zoology.Primary training will be with 8 ACT diplomates with additional expertise available with diplomates in surgery, internal medicine, clinical nutrition, preventive medicine and the practitioner boards. The resident will share emergency after-hours duty with other residents and faculty. There are currently three Theriogenology residents in the Large Animal Teaching Hospital program.



SURGERY RESIDENCY
The program is designed to fulfill the requirements for residency for the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. There are currently three Surgery residents in the Large Animal Teaching Hospital program.


INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY
The program is designed to fulfill the requirements for residency for the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. There are currently three residents in Internal Medicine in the Large Animal Teaching Hospital program.



RESIDENCY FOR AMERICAN BOARD OF VETERINARY PRACTITIONER'S


There is not a resident for the American Board of Veterinary Practitioner currently enrolled. The Internal Medicine residents frequently become members of this Specialty board, also.
