The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) and the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine (VCM) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are seeking a Director for the Agricultural Animal Care and Use Program (AACUP http://research.illinois.edu/regulatory-compliance-safety/aacup) (90%) to serve as the Attending Veterinarian for Agricultural Animals overseeing the Program of Veterinary Care for University agricultural animals and as a Clinical Track Assistant, Associate or Full Professor (10%) to assist in the delivery of the professional veterinary curriculum in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) (http://vetmed.illinois.edu).
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
AACUP Director (OVCR):
Responsible for assuring the health and well-being of agricultural animals used in research, teaching and outreach at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Responsible for oversight of the Program of Veterinary Care for University owned agricultural animals and for managing support services provided by AACUP.
Serve as the Attending Veterinarian for Agricultural Animals, overseeing adequacy of veterinary care and other aspects of animal care and use, including facilities, equipment, animal husbandry, sanitation practices, zoonoses control, hazard containment, personnel training, and emergency response plans.
Work closely with the Head of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine and the Directors of Integrated Farm Animal Management Service and Equine Medicine and Surgery Service, to provide veterinary care
Implement herd health plans, biosecurity programs, and treatment SOPs for on-campus agricultural animals.
Oversee formal arrangements for the provision of adequate veterinary care for animals used in off-campus University agricultural facility including a written Program for Veterinary Care, designated authority to treat diseases and injuries, availability of emergency, weekend, and holiday care, herd health plans, biosecurity programs, and treatment SOPs.
Direct ongoing assessment of animal health, review of pre- and post-operative veterinary care, medical records, and monitor morbidity and mortality for University agricultural animals.
Serve as an active voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and participate in IACUC, AAALAC and USDA site visits and inspections.
Supervise the AACUP staff and AACUP Veterinarians, and oversee business processes, operations and budgets of the AACUP.
Consult with and advise principal investigators, project personnel, managers and staff on protocol preparation and regulatory requirements. Consult on surgical and medical procedures used in research including anesthetics, analgesics, tranquilization and euthanasia.
Communicate and consult with investigators, managers, staff, and students in agricultural production and academic units about requirements, expectations, and business processes within the agricultural animal care and use program.
Support research compliance by leading strategic planning for the agricultural animal use and by developing educational programs and processes that improve the effective, efficient and compliant use and care of animals. Lead processes to incorporate or change policies, standards, and best practices as necessary for continued regulatory compliance.
Specialized Faculty (VCM): for a non-tenured Clinical Assistant, Associate or Full Professor based upon qualifications. The successful candidate will participate in the training of veterinary students in the clinical and didactic professional curriculum of the CVM by collaborating with the other faculty in VCM for course delivery. These courses will span all four years of the curriculum and will include both clinical training (VM 601, 606, 612-617) and didactic lectures and discussions. The type and nature of teaching responsibilities will be determined by curricular need, individual teaching skills and areas of technical expertise. Be an effective collaborator with other VCM and UIUC faculty in the department’s discovery program. These collaborations will be beyond the scope of the AACUP position and will involve meaningful intellectual contribution to discovery programs. The weighting of responsibility between scholarly effort and teaching will be based on the skills of the successful candidate. This position will not have any service or clinical responsibilities for client owned animals presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH).
Required: A DVM degree or equivalent degree. Veterinary experience with multiple agricultural animal species maintained at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Familiarity with husbandry and management practices used in agricultural animal production systems. At least 5 years experience in a regulated program of veterinary care or with regulated animal research. Is expected to complete National Incident Management System (NIMS) training and be prepared to serve as Incident Commander or to serve on the Command Staff in an emergency involving agricultural animals on campus. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be knowledgeable about the Animal Welfare Act and 9 CFR regulations regarding animal care and use, the contents of the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Teaching, and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. To ensure adequate oversight of the quality of veterinary care provided to University animals, must remain knowledgeable about animal care and use regulations policies and about current standards for veterinary practices and procedures.
Preferred: An advanced degree, MS or PhD in Veterinary Medicine or closely related field. Previous administrative or business management experience.
Proposed start date: as soon as possible after closing date.
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Appointment Status: Regular 90% academic professional appointment, 10% non-tenure track specialized faculty / 12 month service basis. Benefit eligible position.
