AU retiree group to host

Public Presentation on Bioterrorism, May 13, 2002

The Auburn University Academy of Lifelong Learners (AUALL) will host a public presentation May 13 on Auburn’s role in the fight against bioterrorism.

Tim Moore, director of program development for research in the AU College of Veterinary Medicine, will address the group’s annual membership meeting at 10 a.m. in the AU Hotel and Conference Center. Coffee will be served at 9:30 a.m.

“We’ll discuss Auburn’s counter-terrorism activities and the role of the veterinary college in fighting agricultural terrorism ” Moore said. “We are working on important projects that can help protect our country’s health and economy.”

Prior to joining Auburn in 1998, his experience included managing the U.S. Army’s largest chemical defense laboratory and working on chemical and biological defense programs with the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

During the anthrax scare last year, Moore served as an information source for a major national newspaper, fielding questions about health issues, building contamination, and cleanup efforts.

Dr. Charlie Knecht, AUALL president and former head of Auburn’s Department of Small Animal Surgery and Medicine, adds, “Our country is facing new threats each day, so we want to learn about these issues and the research being done to counteract them. The public is invited to join us, too.”

AUALL is a group of mainly retired persons who participate in educational programs and activities on topics ranging from ancient Greek civilization to watercolor painting. For more information, contact Mary Burkhart in AU Office of Outreach at (334) 844 5165.
