AU veterinary college names distinguished alumni

AUBURN, Ala. -- The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine has named three of its graduates as the 2001 Wilford S. Bailey Distinguished Alumni in honor of their contributions to animal health and welfare.

The recipients, announced Nov. 1 during the college’s 94th annual conference, are Drs. J. Lee Alley of Montgomery, Ala., Jon Dee of Hollywood, Fla., and Bob Horne of Auburn, Ala.

“These veterinarians have excelled throughout their careers,”  said Dr. Timothy Boosinger, dean of the veterinary college. “They have always been active in supporting their alma mater and have advanced the standing of veterinary medicine in many different arenas.”

Dr. Alley, who recently retired after 22 years as Alabama state veterinarian, is director of governmental affairs for the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association. He graduated in 1956 and worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture as brucellosis coordinator, regional epidemiologist, brucellosis epidemiologist and district veterinarian. He also served six years as extension veterinarian at Auburn. In the mid-1990s as state veterinarian, he initiated a $52 million bond issue to help provide funds for Alabama agriculture, including a new large animal teaching hospital at Auburn and a new Alabama state diagnostic laboratory.

Dr. Dee, a 1966 graduate, has been a partner and surgeon at the Hollywood Animal Hospital in Hollywood, Fla., since 1969. He is also a courtesy clinical professor at the University of Florida and adjunct assistant professor at Ohio State University. He does research on the pathogenesis and repair of injuries in companion animals and sporting dogs. His awards have included the American Veterinary Medical Association’s practitioner research award in 1986 and the American Animal Hospital Association’s southeast region practitioner of the year award in 199l.

Dr. Bob Horne taught at Auburn University for 35 years before joining Tuskegee University seven years ago, where he serves as head of the Department of Clinical Sciences. He earned his veterinary degree from Auburn in 1959, and then joined the school as an instructor. He served as surgery section chief from 1965 to 1980 and was appointed professor in 1971. His research interest is in orthopedic and cardiovascular surgery. Earlier this year, he was presented a certificate of recognition by Governor Don Siegelman for 42 years of outstanding service to the veterinary profession.

The AU veterinary award is named in honor of veterinary pathologist Dr. Wilford Bailey who died in 2000. He held a 50-year appointment at Auburn after receiving his veterinary degree in 1942, serving in positions from instructor to university president.
 

Young Achievers


The College of Veterinary Medicine also honored five Young Achievers from the class of 1991. They are (left to right): Drs. Craig Martin, Bryan Waldridge, David Ramsey, Barbara Monaghan, and Claire Weigand. On the right is Dean Timothy Boosinger.

Dr. Martin is owner of Pinson Animal Hospital in Pinson, Ala. Dr. Waldridge is an associate professor of equine internal medicine at Auburn University. Dr. Ramsey is  an associate professor of comparative ophthalmology at Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Monaghan is a partner at Kelley Animal Hospital in Birmingham, Ala. Dr. Weigand specializes in internal medicine at Rowley Memorial Animal Hospital in Springfield, Mass.

El Toro Award 

The El Toro Award for excellence in food animal medicine was presented to Dr. James Alexander of Yazoo City, Miss. He is a 1977 veterinary graduate who operates Alexander Veterinary Services and is president of the Society for Theriogenology.
