Heatley named to Association of Avian Veterinarians board of directors

Dr. Jill Heatley of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine has been named to the board of directors of the Association of Avian Veterinarians. She will also chair the scholarship program for the international association, which has more than 3,300 members from 43 countries.

"Having an Auburn faculty member named to this group's board of directors is a very high honor," said Dr. Timothy Boosinger, veterinary dean. "It is a tremendous recognition of Dr. Heatley, who will provide excellent leadership."

At Auburn Dr. Heatley serves as a clinical assistant professor of zoological medicine and is the primary veterinarian for the Southeastern Raptor Rehabilitation Center. She is board certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in avian practice.

Dr. Heatley also recently received a grant from the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care to study "Characterization of electrolyte, acid-base and venous blood gas abnormalities of critical conditions in red tailed hawks."

She earned her veterinary degree from Texas A&M in 1995 and completed an internship in wildlife, zoology and exotic medicine at Louisiana State University in 1999. She then completed a three-year residency in zoological medicine and earned a master's degree at LSU in 2002.
