Summary

The prognosis of heat stroke is variable and it depends on the presence or absence of any underlying disease that may have precipitated the hyperthermia. The potential to develop life-threatening complications are great, thus the prognosis is guarded to poor at best. The owners need to be informed of potential clinical signs associated with permanent damage to the kidneys, heart, and liver. Heat stroke victims often have residual neurologic deficits and are predisposed to repetitive heat injuries in the future.
