Dr. Charles M. Hendrix, professor of parasitology, received his DVM degree in 1974 from the University of Georgia. He served as a Captain in the United States Army Veterinary Corps at the Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Fort Gordon, Georgia. From 1976 through 1981, he was a Veterinary Medical Associate at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Minnesota, where he earned both his MS and PhD degrees. Dr. Hendrix came to Auburn University in 1981. Since that time he has received the Norden Distinguished Teaching Award twice and the Auburn University Student Government Teacher of the Year Award twice (once for the College of Veterinary Medicine and once for the Graduate School). He was selected by Mortar Board Honorary as one of six outstanding educators on Auburn University's campus. In 1998, he has authored two veterinary parasitology textbooks, Diagnostic Veterinary Parasitology and Laboratory Procedures for Veterinary Technicians. During the 2002-03 academic year, Dr. Hendrix served as a AAAS/AVMA Congressional Fellow in Washington, DC.

Outreach Interests
Dr. Hendrix has developed an outreach program based on the Department of Health and Human Services' Secretary's Award for Innovations in Health writing competition and the objectives stated in the DHHS document, Healthy People 2010. For his outstanding support of student participation in the Secretary's Award for Innovations in Health, Hendrix has received the DHHS Certificate of Merit. For the past 10 years, Dr. Hendrix has been advising veterinary and other health professions students in the preparation of award-winning proposals for the Secretary's Award -- his advisees have won this prestigious national writing competition a total of 9 times since 1999, bringing in over $34,000 in award monies. He and Dr. Isabelle Thompson of the Department of English have established a webpage (http://www.auburn.edu/event/veterinary_writing/secaward.htm) that serves as a style manual for writing successful proposals for the Secretary's Award.
