Dr. Fred Hoerr, Professor of Pathobiology and Director of the State of Alabama Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories, received
the DVM degree in 1976 from Purdue University. He worked in diseases of poultry at Purdue University in the laboratory of
Dr. Roland Winterfield, completing the MS degree in 1977.  He then entered a pathology residency/graduate program at
Purdue, working on mycotoxin diseases of poultry with Dr. William Carlton, earning the PhD degree in 1981. Dr. Hoerr joined
the staff of the C.S. Roberts Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Auburn University to establish avian diagnostic services in
1980, and was appointed Director in 1987. Avian pathology remains his interest in diagnostic service, teaching and research.
Dr Hoerr is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (1983), and the American College of Poultry
Veterinarians (1993).

Research Interests
My research interests have always involved spontaneous diseases of poultry and other avian species. I have examined the
pathology of thrichothecene mycotoxins and aflatoxin in broiler chickens. Infectious disease studies include avian
cryptosporidiosis, turkey viral hepatitis, viral enteritis of broilers, and Mycoplasma synoviae. I helped develop new diagnostic
procedures for a number of poultry diseases. Recent studies include spontaneous tendonopathy in broiler chickens, the
pathogenesis of ascarids visceral larval migration in turkeys, and the pathogenesis and cause of spontaneous respiratory
diseases and immunosuppression in broilers. My current projects involve poultry immunogenetics (bursal disease,
staphylococcosis) in collaboration with Dr. Sandra Ewald, and chemotherapy of viral diseases of poultry with Dr. Christine
Dykstra.
