What to expect during your appointment:
When you bring your horse to the JT Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital you will be greeted by the front office staff who will notify the clinicians of your arrival. We encourage you to arrive 10 minutes prior to the scheduled appointment time to provide ample time to check-in. Your horse will be unloaded and taken to an examination area, and will be examined by a fourth-year veterinary student (veterinarian in training), a resident veterinarian (specialist in training), and a faculty clinician (specialist veterinarian). Following the examination, all treatment options will be discussed with you and a plan for your horse’s care will be made.
What to bring to your appointment:
All horses admitted to the JT Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital are required to have an up-to-date negative Coggins test. Please bring a copy with you, or have your veterinarian send a copy to our front office staff. If you do not have a current negative Coggins test, please understand that a test will be performed on admission to the hospital.
Please bring any medical records, radiographs, and medications that the horse is currently receiving with you to the appointment. This information will help the veterinarians have a better understanding of your horse’s treatment.
If you are planning to hospitalize your horse, please bring your horse’s hay and feed, or current feeding instructions. The JT Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital offers commercially-produced equine feed and multiple hay options if you are unable to bring your horse’s own feed.
Please bring your preferred method of payment. For horses seen by appointment, an estimate for the cost of care will be discussed with you. The JT Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital requires a deposit be made of half the high-end cost of the estimate at the time the horse is admitted. The full balance of the bill is due at the time of discharge from the hospital.
The JT Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital accepts insurance when your animal is going to be admitted for inpatient care. If you have major medical, emergency colic or surgical coverage on your animal, please let us know when you are setting up your appointment. If you need any additional information on this service, call (334) 844-6459.
