American Association of Equine Practioners (AAEP)
Group Description:
Welcome to the AUCVM Student Chapter of the AAEP!
The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) is the world’s largest professional association of equine veterinarians. The association’s mission “is to improve the health and welfare of the horse, to further the professional development of its members, and to provide resources and leadership for the benefit of the equine industry.”
Our main goal as a student chapter is to provide members with educational programs, networking opportunities, and current information relevant to those entering into the equine industry as a veterinary medical professional. We offer an annual AAEP Short Course in conjunction with National AAEP that includes both lecture and wet lab activities regarding farriery, dentistry, and advanced horse handling.
Principle Activities, Events, or Programs:
On our Chapter level, student members are offered the opportunity to develop their clinical skills through educational wet labs and demonstrations such as equine reproduction, cardiology, diagnostic imaging, lameness evaluation as well as many other areas of interest. We offer weekly AAEP Rounds every Monday afternoon, where student members review with clinicians and/or residents current cases within the equine hospital.
We also seek to hold monthly club lunch meetings highlighting a topic of interest. In the past we have had our own clinicians, outside researchers, pharmaceutical sales representatives, and other specialists in their fields of study visit Auburn to present on various topics relevant to the industry.
How this group’s activities benefit the profession, university, and community:
The AUCVM John T. Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital provides students an excellent learning environment with state of the art facilities and other opportunities to interact with board-certified specialists and faculty members that are nationally renowned in the industry.
Overall, Auburn’s Student Chapter of the AAEP is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of those interested in pursuing a career in equine veterinary medicine that goes beyond the standard professional curriculum.
