Student Chapter of the Society for Theriogenology (SFT)
Group Description:
Welcome to the Auburn University student chapter of the Society for Theriogenology, and fear not: if you don’t know what the word “theriogenology” means, then you are not alone! Theriogenology is the study of animal reproduction. Etymologically, theriogenology is derived from the ancient Greek words ‘therio’ (meaning beast or animal), ‘gen’ (meaning genesis or creation), and ‘ology’ (meaning the study of).”The Society for Theriogenology is an organization of veterinarians dedicated to animal reproduction, whose mission is to promote standards of excellence in reproductive medicine, to provide outreach and education to veterinarians, and to foster continual improvements in theriogenology.”-The Society for Theriogenology
Principle activities, events, or programs:
As Auburn’s SFT student chapter, we strive to put the national SFT mission into action by providing hands-on educational opportunities for our members that go above and beyond what students will learn in the classroom. These include lectures over a wide range of topics and wet labs that cover semen collection, rectal palpation, artificial insemination (AI) techniques, and more. Our most popular activity is foal watch. Foal watch allows students to get hands on experience with the very complicated process of equine parturition and foal handling/training. Teams are put together every spring semester, and all interested individuals are eligible to participate. In 2014, we also held our first Foal Auction as part of one of the CVM’s continuing education events.
How this group’s activities benefit the profession, university, and community:
Participation in SFT encourages students to learn more about an important specialty of veterinary medicine. As part of our outreach mission, the Foal Auction and Continuing Education Event allows the community to learn more about theriogenology and contribute to the university.
How to get involved with this group:
Annual dues are collected each fall and spring. Dues include membership for Auburn’s SFT as well as national SFT membership. Benefits of national membership include reduced annual conference registration, access to intern/externship information, and much more.
