VOICE/Broad Spectrum
Group Description:
VOICE (Veterinarians as One for an Inclusive Community for Empowerment) is a national student-run organization that is committed to increasing awareness, respect, and sensitivity to differences among all individuals and communities in the field of veterinary medicine. Our goals are to promote the veterinary profession, emphasize the importance of cross-cultural awareness in the profession and to celebrate diversity within the profession of veterinary medicine.
Broad Spectrum Veterinary Student Association’s mission is to connect, support and empower community for LGBT+* students and allies across veterinary education. LGBT+* will be used as an inclusive acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer,Questioning, Asexual and others who self-identify on the sexual orientation and/or gender expression continuums.
The VOICE and Broad Spectrum chapters of Auburn are combined under one student-directed executive board composed of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Broad Spectrum Representatives.
Principle activities, events, or programs:
VOICE/Broad Spectrum is a relatively new club to Auburn’s campus, so there are no permanent recurring events that are specific to VOICE. New officers are developing plans for programming currently. Past programming includes hosting events such as heritage month celebrations, guest lectures, and taste fairs.
How this group’s activities benefit the profession, university, and community:
The mission of VOICE is to make AUCVM a more inclusive environment for everyone. Therefore, it directly benefits the university and surrounding community by supporting individuals of all races, ethnicities, religions, genders, sexualities, abilities, and other identities. The veterinary profession will benefit from the entrance of Auburn-trained veterinarians from a variety of backgrounds who can better relate to clients and coworkers.
