Larger cities, such as Huntsville, Birmingham, Nashville, and Memphis, are all within approximately 2.5 hours of our area. Florence and the Shoals area have a population of 140,000, encompassing large city activities with a small town atmosphere and plenty of Southern hospitality. Located on the beautiful Tennessee River, we have plenty of water activities, including several Bass Tournaments during the year. The many cultural activities scheduled for the year include the Helen Keller Festival, the W. C. Handy Festival, Arts Alive, the Trail of Tears in nearby Waterloo, and many theater productions and musical events. Recreation events include baseball, softball, soccer, golf, and many walking trails, including several nature trails maintained by the Tennessee Valley Authority, our public power producer. A Robert Trent Jones Golf Course is also located in the area. Educational institutions include the University of North Alabama, a four-year state university, Northwest Shoals Community College, a two-year junior college, and excellent public and private school systems.
