Established in 1935, the SPCA Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare is a private non-profit organization operating under IRS Section 501c3. For nearly 80 years we have been placing thousands of needy animals into loving "forever" homes.
The SPCA Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare is seeking a Medical Director for our animal shelter and surgical center. The SPCA Albrecht Center is a non-profit, limited admissions, modern facility built for high volume spay and neuter. We are a Humane Alliance Model Clinic, as well as a shelter and we adopt 750-800 animals/year.
The ideal DVM candidate would have 2+ years experience with HQHVSN (high quality, high volume spay/neuter), possess an active SC license and an active DEA registration or the ability to obtain one. Candidates should be comfortable performing 30-35 surgeries a day, communicating with clients about our basic wellness services, overseeing daily operations of clinic team, and addressing the needs of all shelter pets. The medical director would oversee the clinic manager and staff and report directly to the CEO.
In addition to surgical services, the SPCA provides vaccinations and wellness screening. However, strategic planning is in place to expand to a full service clinic. Therefore, the SPCA is looking for a medical director that embraces our mission and strives towards the advancement of the clinic utilizing best practices.
We are located in the beautiful, historical town of Aiken, SC where the living is affordable. Aiken is a progressive, animal loving, cultural area with performing arts centers, colleges and some of the finest amenities in the south.
Salary – $75,000 – $80,000 based on experience. Room to grow based on eventual expansion to Full Service clinic.
Summary- Responsible for working closely with clinic team and managerial staff throughout the organization. Oversight of all medical practices and protocols.
-Must be a dedicated shelter medicine veterinarian.
-Actively promote the vision and mission of the SPCA Albrecht Center to provide for the welfare of all companion animals.
– Must represent the SPCA in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
– Must be even tempered, thoughtful, organized, motivated, positive thinking, and patient.
-Provide high quality care and services.
-Physically examine all surgical patients to ensure their surgical candidacy, examine surgical patients peri and post operatively to ensure anesthetic safety and recovery, examine all shelter pets on an as needed basis and prior to adoption.
-Perform 30-35 surgeries daily.
-Examine, diagnose and treat shelter pets as needed.
-Ensure safety and efficiency in the clinic
-Familiarity with AVImark software and paperless record keeping.
-Implement and supervise programs for disease control throughout the building.
-Oversee handling and recording of controlled substances by clinic team (vet tech/clinic manager only).
-Mentor 4th year veterinary students enrolled in our externship program
-Able to learn and implement new S/N techniques, skills, information, etc. as they become available. Promote continuing development of medical care through continued education. Keep abreast of veterinary concerns and trends in the animal welfare movement.
-Participate in special projects, events, comment/write articles, lead educational opportunities for staff, volunteers, public, etc
-Available to clinic and shelter manager by phone (after hours) for emergency situations pertaining to shelter or surgical pets.
-Attend/Lead admin and team meetings.
-Humane Alliance Trained or willing to go to HA training
-Other duties as assigned
