The internal medicine service at the Auburn University Small Animal Clinic is dedicated to providing quality care to dogs and cats in an advanced academic teaching environment. Care, diagnosis, and management of the patients are under the supervision of senior board-certified internists.

Diplomats of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (DACVIM) are certified after completion of a residency program and passing a multi-level national examination.

The Internal Medicine service accepts referrals in the areas of cardiopulmonary, gastrointestinal, pancreatic, hepatic, urogenital, hematopoietic, endocrine, immune-mediated, and infectious diseases.

Because of the nature of a teaching hospital, veterinarians training to be specialists (residents and interns) and senior veterinary students are involved in the communication with the owners and referring veterinarians. In addition, specialists in the areas of neurology, oncology, dermatology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, soft tissue surgery, and critical care are often consulted and involved in case management.  Radiologists provide insight in imaging studies including radiography, MRI, CT scan, ultra sound, and other image modalities including radiation diagnostics and therapeutic oncology.

Important in the small animal clinic is the understanding by the owner that, regardless of who is communicating with the owner, all decisions are ultimately the responsibility of and are being directed by the senior internal medicine faculty on clinical service (typically 2 senior faculty).

The Small Animal Clinic is supported by very dedicated staff and technicians who assist in the medical records, and more importantly, the care of the patients. We view you as having placed your dog or cat in our trust, and we collectively take that responsibility very seriously.
