Biography
Dr. Ismaeel joined the Auburn University faculty in August 2025. As Principal Investigator of the Metabolic Myopathy Lab, Dr. Ismaeel’s research program is focused on investigating molecular pathways and mechanisms that result in metabolic changes in skeletal muscle in aging and in response to chronic diseases. He has particular interest in understanding the development of lower extremity skeletal muscle pathology in atherosclerotic peripheral artery disease (PAD). Specifically, calf muscle pathological changes, characterized by an acquired skeletal muscle metabolic myopathy, are associated with impaired walking performance in people with PAD. Research in the Metabolic Myopathy Lab is focused on identifying skeletal muscle targets for novel therapies, with the hopes of improving walking performance and preventing mobility loss in the large and growing number of people disabled by PAD.
