Biography

 

Dr. Camilo J. Morales is an Assistant Professor of Equine Internal Medicine in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and Master of Science (MS) degrees from CES University in Medellín, Colombia. From 2012 to 2018, he served as an Assistant Professor at LaSallista University in Colombia.

Dr. Morales completed a Specialty Internship in Large Animal Internal Medicine at the University of Guelph, Canada (2019–2020), followed by a residency in Large Animal Internal Medicine at the University of California, Davis (2020–2023). In 2023, he became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Large Animal). He subsequently completed a PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology and a residency in Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology at the University of California, Davis (2023–2026), while serving as an equine internal medicine faculty clinician.

His academic work has been supported through several competitive fellowships, research awards, and grants. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and serves as an editor of the second edition of Equine Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. He also serves as a peer reviewer for several veterinary and pharmacology journals. Dr. Morales is a member of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM), the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology (ACVCP), and the American Academy of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics (AAVPT).

Outside of work, he enjoys hiking, paddle boarding, traveling, and raising cattle.

Research Interests

 

Dr. Morales’ research focuses on translational medicine, primarily using the horse as a model to advance therapeutics that benefit equine patients while informing treatment strategies across veterinary species. His interests include clinical pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD), antimicrobial therapy and stewardship, novel therapeutics, and evidence-based medicine to optimize drug therapy and improve patient outcomes. Clinically, Dr. Morales enjoys all aspects of equine internal medicine, with particular interests in gastrointestinal disorders, infectious diseases, neonatal and foal medicine, and neurology.
