Biography

Dr. Kira Noordwijk spent her early years moving across the globe with her family. Despite the many moves, her passion for horses developed at an early age and progressed while participating in the hunter/jump circuit and eventually landed in Three-Day Eventing. Dr. Noordwijk attended Oregon State University for her undergraduate education where she competed on the Three-Day Eventing team and received a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Veterinary Medine (DVM equivalent) from the Royal Veterinary College, London, in 2017 where she discovered a love for playing polo. Since then, she has completed a rotating equine internship at Chaparral Veterinary Medical Center in Cave Creek, Arizona, an equine surgery internship at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky, a research fellowship at Cornell University, and a rotating equine internship at Mississippi State University. She then completed a residency in Equine Surgery and Sports Medicine at Auburn University in pursuit of diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.

After completing her residency in 2024, Dr. Noordwijk stayed at Auburn University to continue her work on her PhD in Biomedical Sciences and to support the equine emergency services. Dr. Noordwijk is an active member of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS), the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

In addition to working with horses, Dr. Noordwijk also enjoys hiking, traveling, gardening, and cooking/baking. When not working, she enjoys spending time with her boxer puppy Xani.

Research Interests

Dr. Noordwijk’s research endeavors aim to bring better understanding to the development and progression of equine sarcoids. In the future, she hopes to expand these studies to other equine cancer forms including, but not limited to, equine melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Ultimately, the goal is to develop better target therapies and preventative medicine.
