Biography

Dr. Carl A. Pinkert, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pathobiology, is a leading expert in animal modeling and genetic engineering (transgenesis) technologies. His pioneering research in reproductive biology and embryology developed foundational technologies for genetic engineering of nuclear and mitochondrial genomes that targeted animal production as well as human metabolic and developmental disease. Dr. Pinkert has published widely, and his research was supported by state, federal (including NIH, NSF, USDA), foundational, and industry funding.

Beyond the laboratory, Dr. Pinkert has steered research strategy as Associate Dean for Research in the CVM, interim head of Pathobiology, and associate vice president for Research at Auburn University, vice president for research and economic development at the University of Alabama, and interim vice president for research and economic development at Tennessee Tech. He served in leadership roles on the Alabama-Mississippi Sea Grant Consortium, Alabama EPSCoR Steering Committee, and several boards including the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama Foundation, and Tuscaloosa County’s Diversion Program Inc. and Industrial Development Authority. He is an AAAS Fellow, Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow, and was elected to Sigma Xi, Phi Zeta, and Gamma Sigma Delta honoraries.

Dr. Pinkert currently serves as President of the Pinkert Consulting Group LLC. Harnessing decades of executive academic experience, he facilitates strategic planning, public-private partnerships, grantsmanship, and research innovation.
